Jason's Dream Day.

Sep 17, 2015

He is the number one in the FedExCup rankings and, judging by his impressive start to the 2015 BMW Championship, Jason Day fully intends to hold on to this prestigious position. The Australian had played 17 holes before the opening round was suspended due to inclement weather. By the time he was forced to stop, Day had already reached 10 under par.

"I feel like this is one of the best rounds I've ever played, especially with how the wind is. It feels like a practice round, like it doesn't really matter. And no matter what you do, even if you hit a bad shot, it's going to be all right," said Day, who claimed his first Major title at last month’s PGA Championship. The 27-year-old's card included nine birdies and one eagle, outdoing his illustrious playing partners: Day is playing alongside American stars Jordan Spieth (-5) and Rickie Fowler (-1) for the opening two rounds.

Spieth – a full five shots off the lead – is one of Day's closest rivals, tied in third place. The two-time Major winner did not make the best of starts, but the world number two kick-started his round with a hole-in-one on the second (his eleventh hole). "Happened to make it on one of the only par 3s, on which there is not a car involved," Spieth joked. The course at Conway Farms features four par-3 holes, half of which offer the opportunity to win a dream BMW with a hole-in-one: the new BMW 7 Series on the 11th and the BMW i8 on the 17th.

Spieth was still a winner, however: his ace earned a donation of 100,000 US dollars in his name from BMW of North America to the Evans Scholars Foundation – the equivalent of a college scholarship for a caddie.

Second after the opening round is US rookie Daniel Berger (-6), whose performance underlines what a strong debut season he has enjoyed. Bubba Watson (USA) also made a fine start: the two-time Masters champion is tied in seventh place on four under par after 13 holes. A further shot back on three under, Phil Mickelson (USA, thru 15), world number one Rory McIlroy (NIR, thru 12) and the last man to win at Conway Farms, Zach Johnson (USA, thru 18), are also well-placed going into day two.

Unfortunately Jim Furyk, who two years ago carded an even better round than that of Jason Day today, is no longer in the tournament. The American, who shot a stunning round of 59 on his way to third place in 2013, was forced to retire with a wrist injury.
